I live in a magical seaside village in greater Cape Town, South Africa. Years ago when I was a wee lass and we passed through the coastal towns on Sunday drives around the peninsula, I imagined myself as a bohemian artist / poet living in a sea-sprayed cottage on the mountainside. 5 Years ago I found myself living in Kalk Bay at last and for just over a year now in Simons Town, more inspired than ever to be that artist/poet/maker of things.
I was raised by a single mother who, when I was around 10 years old, quit her secretarial job to make a living selling the products of her creativity and I remember always being so proud to fill in “artist” next to “mother’s profession” on school forms.
Art, craft and making was a way of life in our family and now I can’t imagine what my life would be like without numerous creative projects in various stages of completion. I am constantly working on new ideas and struggle to stick to one thing, but I figure: why even try to do that when it’s so much more fun to keep trying new things, keep figuring out how to do them, keep making mistakes and keep the creative spark alive? So that’s what I’m going to do and, even better, I’m going to share them with you here and hope you enjoy the results!
I would love to do some commissioned work – especially illustration, my current favourite – so if you have anything in mind, I would love to hear from you.
